Creating safe spaces for children to enable parents to work

ArticlesJun 5, 2026

During the 2024–2025 coffee harvest, ofi established 30 Coffee Kindergartens across Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua offering free care, education, and nutritious meals to 718 children (aged 6–13). These award-winning, seasonal centers operate in partnership with local NGOs like Funcafe and Educo, offering a secure environment during the school holidays, which coincide with the peak harvest period.

With childcare options otherwise few and far between, the Kindergartens provide safe, accessible childcare to support worker productivity and incomes, community development, and reduce child labour risks.

“This is the first time there is something like this in our community. During harvest season, some kids tend to forget about their books and schoolwork, but for many of them, it’s clear that the time they spent at the Coffee Kindergarten really made a difference.”
