Award-winning innovation in malnutrition screening
The Infant Malnutrition System Alert (IMSA) smartphone-based application geolocates cases of malnutrition in Côte d’Ivoire, where one in five children experience stunted growth and development. This digital solution developed by an ofi staff member, won the Edie Social Sustainability Project of the Year award in 2025, for its innovation and impact. IMSA replaces existing paper-based screening questionnaires, enabling real-time alerts and earlier detection and treatment of malnutrition cases.
In Côte d’Ivoire’s cashew communities, ofi’s teams and volunteers helped screen over 115,600 children from 89,213 households in the Bouaké North-East and Seguela districts using the IMSA app and manual screening methods in 2025. This identified 354 moderate and acute cases of malnutrition, which were then referred to healthcare facilities. This was achieved in partnership with Côte d’Ivoire’s National Nutrition Programme (PNN).
During the year, ofi’s cocoa business joined this partnership with PNN and implemented IMSA. They reached 35,700 children from 22,669 households, of whom 57 were identified with moderate or severe malnutrition and referred to healthcare facilities.
